Kevin Williams and Tre Martin - Relationship

Kevin Williams and Tre Martin were lifelong friends from West Baltimore and members of The Survivors. Kevin became Tre’s closest confidant. Their friendship began at the West Baltimore Recreation Center and continued through the 2019 police-violence incident, Tre’s military service, his critical injuries at Camp Pendleton in December 2026, and his return to Baltimore in 2027.

Overview

Kevin and Tre often responded to danger in different but compatible ways. Kevin watched people closely, noticed changes in emotion or regulation, and focused on what would help the person in front of him. Tre moved quickly toward physical danger and placed himself between other people and harm. Both men carried those tendencies into adulthood.

The clearest public example came on June 15, 2019, when Tre and Darnell pulled Kevin backward after Officer Rodriguez pointed a gun at Kevin and fired a warning shot. Kevin later developed PTSD from the encounter. When Tre was critically injured in 2026 after protecting fellow service members, Kevin traveled to California with the other Survivors and spoke publicly about Tre’s history of protecting people.

How They Met

Kevin and Tre met in childhood through the West Baltimore Recreation Center. By circa 2007–2008, they belonged to the five-boy group that also included Marcus Henderson, Darnell Taylor, and Jamal Thompson. They played basketball, participated in center activities, and advocated together when volunteers excluded Marcus.

Foundation of the Friendship

Kevin and Tre shared loyalty to the group and a willingness to act when someone was being hurt. During the 2014 recreation-center crisis, Tre confronted the volunteer who had assaulted Marcus while Kevin stayed close to Marcus, reassured him, and helped him drink water. Kevin also remained alert to Tre’s intensity and shifted slightly as if prepared to stop him if the confrontation became physical.

Their adult friendship continued through basketball, group meals, military separations, and crisis travel.

Dynamics and Communication

Shared activity carried much of their connection. Basketball and the wider rhythms of the Survivors gave them ways to reconnect, while Kevin’s attention to Tre’s emotional cues continued during ordinary gatherings.

Shared History and Milestones

Summer 2014: Recreation-Center Advocacy

Main article: Summer 2014 MJ Assault Crisis

Kevin and Tre joined Darnell and Jamal in repeatedly challenging recreation-center volunteers who had stopped including Marcus in activities. When Shanice assaulted Marcus, Tre confronted her and refused to leave Marcus. Kevin knelt beside Marcus, offered reassurance and water, and remained alert to both Marcus’s condition and Tre’s anger.

June 2019: Tre Pulls Kevin to Safety

Kevin, Tre, Darnell, and Jamal reached Marcus before police and helped persuade him to drop the knife he had carried onto the roof. When Officer Rodriguez pointed a service weapon at the unarmed Kevin and then fired a warning shot, Tre and Darnell grabbed Kevin and pulled him backward out of the line of fire.

The encounter left Kevin with PTSD connected to police, firearms, and sudden loud sounds. Tre’s intervention remained one part of a friendship that had begun years earlier and continued into adulthood.

Early 2023: Riverside Courts Reunion

After Tre returned from Basic Reconnaissance Course training, the Survivors gathered for basketball at Riverside Courts and dinner at Martha’s Diner. During the game, Kevin noticed Tre’s expression go blank when someone used the word “underwater,” recognizing a trauma response that Tre immediately tried to move past. The moment became another example of Kevin noticing a friend’s distress during an otherwise ordinary gathering.

December 2026: Camp Pendleton

Tre was critically injured while saving more than thirty service members during a training accident. Kevin flew to San Diego with Marcus, Darnell, and Jamal to be at his bedside. The 2019 video resurfaced as national attention returned to Tre’s life.

June 2027: An Accessible Baltimore Home

Kevin and Darnell acquired a jointly owned Baltimore house designed around their shared life and Tre’s continuing place in it. The house included wheelchair access, hearing and fatigue accommodations, and a bedroom treated as Tre’s whenever he stayed there.

Health, Access, and Care

Kevin’s PTSD and Tre’s later traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, chronic pain, hearing loss, tinnitus, and trauma symptoms affected their adult lives. Kevin joined the group response after Tre’s 2026 injuries, and their care for one another drew on long familiarity, in-person presence, and the shared support of the Survivors.

Public and Professional Context

The 2019 footage and the coverage of Tre’s 2026 rescue made parts of the friendship public. Baltimore reporting compared Tre’s action at Camp Pendleton with his role in pulling Kevin to safety in 2019. In interviews after the Camp Pendleton incident, Kevin described Tre’s longer history of protecting other people.
